Description

Polycarbonate sheet (also known by the trade names of ‘Lexan’, ‘Makrolon’ or ‘Macrolux’) is the strongest form of clear plastic sheeting available, making it a high performance material for a huge variety of domestic and commercial applications.

Key Features:

  • Extremely high impact resistance, almost unbreakable
  • Weather resistant
  • Offers UV protection
  • Available with polished edges
  • Half the weight of glass
  • Optically clear
  • Excellent fire rating (Class 1)
  • Safe to use with foods
  • Supplied with protective film on both sides

Not only easy to handle, polycarbonate sheet is remarkably impact and weather resistant – perfect for both indoor and outdoor installation. This product also offers good UV protpolyction and will aid in protection of pictures, plants and other items susceptible to harmful UV rays.

Where other clear acrylic sheets are stronger than glass, Polycarbonate is almost unbreakable. This superb strength, combined with the fact that it is just half the weight of glass, makes Polycarbonate sheeting easy to install and perfect for applications where safety is of the upmost importance. Additionally, it has a maximum light transmission to up to 90% and is as optically clear as glass, offering the benefits of greatly improved strength with no loss of aesthetic.

Polycarbonate also has a great fire performance of up to Class 1, which is significantly better than acrylic,  making it a great alternative to acrylic especially in schools, colleges and airports where safety is vital.

Unlike acrylic, Polycarbonate has the added advantage that it can be cold curved without risk of it cracking or breaking.

Further improving its versatility, it can be thermoformed but the sheet must be oven dried beforehand as it absorbs atmospheric moisture which will then cause bubbles when heated.

Polycarbonate can be bonded using suitable solvent based adhesives.

We offer polycarbonate sheet cut to size in a range of thicknesses from 2mm to 10mm.

Applications

Uses for Polycarbonate sheeting include:

  • Protective screens
  • Glazing
  • Safety visors
  • Secondary glazing
  • Greenhouse panels
  • Shed windows
  • Smoking shelters
  • Trolley shelters
  • Boat windows
  • Light fittings
  • Balustrades
  • Animal Enclosures
  • Roofing
  • Machine guards
  • Lightweight motorsport windows

Wall protection Reviewed by

Our small entrance lobby need to be redecorated due to old wallpaper. The clothes rack/hooks I'd installed some time ago occasionally had a 'wetish' coat on it and affected the wall a little. After removing the patterned wall paper I decided to white emulsion the lobby as a stop gap until - and if - we wallpaper again. In order to protect the wall I thought it would be a good idea to put a sheet of CLEAR polycarb so that whatever patterned wallpaper is used would show through and be protected. I wanted polycarb rather than acrylic due to the toughness and flexibility polycarb has.

Second Phase Reviewed by

As I'm doing secondary glazing on a budget, and most suppliers want me to buy sliding window kits to fit the 72" windows in my old house, I decided to look for suppliers of large sheet acrylic...and found you as a search result. Looking at reviews I took the chance and ordered....was very pleased with the service and care taken with packing. So when I had enough money to do some more of the windows, I did not hesitate to order again from you. Received the same great service as the first time round. One more phase to go when the funds are available so I'll be back.

Very happy customer. Good transaction, good contact and service experience. The product arrived in good time, undamaged in protective package. The TNT delivery driver was happy for me to checked for damage. No damage. I don't believe in 5 star ratings, so hence a sensible and genuine 4 stars. Brilliant and many thanks.

Q: Is clear polycarbonate suitable for secondary glazing?

A: Yes, it is. The benefits of secondary glazing include increased thermal and sound insulation as well as extra security. Polycarbonate is lightweight and flexible, making it very easy for DIY installation, and its high light translucence means there will be no noticable reduction in light entering the room.

Q: Is there a difference between Lexan, Makrolon, and any other brands?

A: These are just brand names for polycarbonate and there is no discernible difference between these two brands or any other brand name products.

Q: Is polycarbonate as clear as glass?

A: Polycarbonate is as optically clear as glass and maximises light transmission by up to 90%.
