With a melting point of 327°C and a workable temperature as low as -268.15°C, PTFE outstrips all other engineering plastics in a huge variety of commercial applications and demanding environments. Its remarkable resistance to chemicals, moisture absorption and wear is only the tip of the iceberg, as PTFE is also capable of being machined and can be relied upon to perform consistently no matter where it is used.
Also known by the tradename 'Teflon', PTFE has a high resistance to stress cracking and has a low friction surface that exceeds even that of Nylon 6, Nylon 6.6 and Acetal; which is why PTFE is often used to construct components of a larger machine or structure (be it as a plate, bearing, etc.). It also makes it an ideal material for use around food, and in fact you're likely to find PTFE-coated, non-stick pans in almost every household.
We offer PTFE sheets in only the one, natural colour, but it is available in thicknesses ranging from 4mm to 12mm, as well as with rounded corners and pre-drilled holes. Moreover, as well as coming in a range of standard pre-cut sizes, this engineering plastic is available cut-to-size. This means that we can cut and deliver your PTFE sheet to you ready to be used; all you need to do is input your desired dimensions and you'll be instantly provided with a quote.
The surfaces of PTFE sheets are unique in that they are so slippery that they are the only known material that a Gecko cannot stick to! It is because of its non-stick, low-friction surfaces that we recommend that inexperienced DIY practitioners order cut-to-size PTFE sheets, as it can be difficult to clamp and hold in place without inadvertently damaging it. Its slipperiness also makes it more difficult than other engineering plastics to cut and machine, though it is worth noting that it still can be effectively machined by those with experience.
The most chemically unreactive engineering plastic available on the market today, PTFE can be used safely in almost any environment. If however you're unsure whether or not it is the right material for your current project, or even if you're just looking for advice or clarification, please feel free to contact us by email or over the phone.
