What Is A CNC Router Cutter?

A CNC (Computer Numerical Control) router cutter is a router machine that cuts sheet materials accurately using computer-controlled cutting systems. Typically, if you have a rectangle or square piece of sheet material with no optional extras such as rounded corners, drilled holes, or cutouts, the material will be cut with the CNC Router. Your material will also not have edge finishing and the edge will be unpolished so you may see some marks and have a more matte finish.

Router Cut With Diamond Polish

Once a piece of material has been cut using the router cutter, it can then be diamond polished using a separate machine. Diamond polishing is a method used to achieve a high-quality, glossy clear finish on the edges of the plastic sheet.

It is important to note, that polished edges cannot be added to a sheet larger than 1500m. Additionally, once the edge of an acrylic sheet has been polished it cannot be glued. If you try to glue a polished edge, the plastic will craze and the aesthetic of the acrylic will be irreparably damaged. If the edges are already polished and you want to glue them, try scuffing them with sandpaper as this may prevent it.

*If you have a sheet that is over 1500mm and would like a Diamond Polished effect, please contact our sales team as we can do a polished finish with the laser.

Router Cut With Flame Polish

Another edge finishing type is flame polishing. This gives a very similar effect to diamond polishing and is a technique used to smooth and polish the edges of plastic sheeting by directly exposing the edges to an open flame.

Flame polishing is commonly used in acrylic fabrication, especially in applications where a clear, polished finish is desired. It is often employed for creating displays, signs, trophies, and various decorative items where the appearance of the edges is essential.

Laser Cutting

Depending on the material you have selected and the specific project requirements, we may decide to cut your material using a laser cutter. Laser cutting is an advanced and precise method for cutting various materials. It harnesses the power of a high-intensity laser to make accurate cuts. Guided by a computer-aided design (CAD) file, the laser cutter’s head moves precisely to achieve the desired shape or cut.

Through vaporization, burning, or melting, the laser expertly processes the material, resulting in clean and precise edges. If your material is cut using the laser cutter, you may not require any additional polished edges depending on your sheet material requirements.
