Polycarbonate sheet (also known by the trade names of ‘Makrolon’ or ‘Macrolux’) is the strongest form of clear plastic sheeting available, making it a high performance material for a huge variety of domestic and commercial applications.

Key Features:

  • Extremely high impact resistance, almost unbreakable
  • Weather resistant
  • Offers UV protection
  • Half the weight of glass
  • Optically clear
  • Excellent fire rating (Class 1)
  • Safe to use with foods
  • Supplied with protective film on both sides

Not only easy to handle, polycarbonate sheet is remarkably impact and weather resistant – perfect for both indoor and outdoor installation. This product also offers good UV protection and will aid in protection of pictures, plants and other items susceptible to harmful UV rays.

Where other clear acrylic sheets are stronger than glass, Polycarbonate is almost unbreakable. This superb strength, combined with the fact that it is just half the weight of glass, makes Polycarbonate sheeting easy to install and perfect for applications where safety is of the upmost importance. Additionally, it has a maximum light transmission to up to 90% and is as optically clear as glass, offering the benefits of greatly improved strength with no loss of aesthetic.

Polycarbonate also has a great fire performance of up to Class 1, which is significantly better than acrylic, making it a great alternative to acrylic especially in schools, colleges and airports where safety is vital. Unlike acrylic, Polycarbonate has the added advantage that it can be cold curved without risk of it cracking or breaking. Further improving its versatility, it can be thermoformed but the sheet must be oven dried beforehand as it absorbs atmospheric moisture which will then cause bubbles when heated.

Polycarbonate can be bonded using suitable solvent based adhesives.

We offer polycarbonate sheet cut to size in a range of thicknesses from 2mm to 10mm.

Uses for Polycarbonate sheeting include:

  • Protective screens
  • Glazing
  • Safety visors
  • Secondary glazing
  • Greenhouse panels
  • Shed windows
  • Smoking shelters
  • Trolley shelters
  • Boat windows
  • Light fittings
  • Balustrades
  • Factory Screens
  • Animal Enclosures
  • Roofing
  • Machine guards
  • Wall protection
  • Lightweight motorsport windows

Can you use Clear Polycarbonate Sheet as an alternative to a glass splashback behind the cooker and still look as good as a clear glass splashback?
Polycarbonate has a melting point of 155°C and in comparison, toughened glass can withstand temperatures of up to 400°C hence it is not recommended to use this material behind the cooker without maintaining a safe distance.
Can you source fire category 0 polycarbonate? And can you source any with a thickness greater than 10mm? Many thanks
We can source various thicknesses and variations of this material however this is dependant on the order size. For more information, please contact our sales team.
    Can polycarbonate sheet be sawed?
Sawing polycarbonate is much easier than cutting acrylic. When cutting Polycarbonate make sure to leave the protective film and mark the cutting line on a piece of masking tape, not on the foil. A circular saw is the best tool to use when cutting larger lengths of polycarbonate.
Would clear polycarbonate help with sound reduction? What thickness would you recommend for using as extra noise reduction against a double glazed window?
Polycarbonate certainly helps with noise reduction when used as secondary glazing. At a thickness of 4mm, the noise can be reduced by a minimum of 50%.
Is 2mm thick polycarbonate sheeting flexible or rigid?
The rigidity of the panels depends on the overall size.
Hi, Can polycarbonate sheet be drilled/countersunk using standard wood or hss bits..? Thanks
Standard wood working drill bits are suitable for drilling holes in polycarbonate sheet. Please ensure to use a piece of scrap material underneath the panel to act as a backstop. This will ensure the drilling will not blow out the panel as the drill exits the material.
I am looking to build a green house using polycarbonate. Does polycarbonate expand and shrink with hot and cold weather?
Yes, polycarbonate has a rate of expansion of 0.07mm per 10°C per 100mm length. This means a 1000mm length could increase by 1.2mm per 10°.
Can you cut polycarbonate with a laser?
Polycarbonate can be cut with a laser however it can create toxic fumes and burn the edges so we would not advise it.
I need to replace a piece of glass for cold frame, measuring 124cm x75cm. I am wondering if Inshould go for Perspex or polycarbonate?
Both materials will work perfectly fine for the purpose. Polycarbonate has better strength resistance and is shatterproof.
Can I collect my order locally?
Yes, you may collect your order from our depot in Lee Mill Industrial Estate, Devon. Please select "Collect In Person" at the checkout.
