Frequently Asked Questions: Polypropylene - Cut Plastic Sheeting

FAQ: Polypropylene

Polypropylene sheet is a thermoplastic polymer used for a range of applications. Due to its characteristics and low cost, it is one of the most common plastics used in engineering and manufacturing.

Here are answers to the most frequently asked questions we get about Polypropylene:

What can Polypropylene be used for?

It can be used for both household and industrial applications. It is FDA approved for food contact so it can be used to make plastic food containers and reusable bottles. The automotive industry also uses this material for car dashboards, bumpers, cladding and exterior trims.

Key Features of Polypropylene:

  • Inexpensive thermoplastic
  • Extremely high chemical resistance
  • High fatigue resistance
  • Impermeable to water vapour
  • High impact resistance

Disadvantages of Polypropylene:

  • It is highly flammable
  • Has poor resistant to chlorinated solvents and aromatics
  • Susceptible to UV degradation
  • Has poor bonding properties
  • Typically more expensive than ABS Sheet’s

Can it be recycled?

As it is a thermoplastic material, it is mechanically recyclable. This is because it can be melted and remoulded into new products.

What colours and finishes are available?

Our range of Polypropylene sheets comes in either White, Black or Natural. The natural sheet offers a very lite translucent finish which is almost a translucent beige colour. Our sheets are available to cut to size and shape with available thicknesses ranging between 1mm and 12mm. The maximum sheet size available is 2440mm x 1220mm.

Polypropylene is an engineering/industrial-grade material that may have imperfections in the surface – we, therefore, would not recommend this material is used for aesthetic purposes.

What is Fluted Polypropylene?

Fluted Polypropylene is an extruded, twin wallboard, commonly known as ‘Correx’ and made from polypropylene plastic / co-polymer granules. It is a lightweight sheet that has excellent strength for its low cost. It is commonly used for temporary signage and has great printing capabilities.
