Description
Clear Polycarbonate
Clear Polycarbonate Sheet (also known by the trade names of ‘Makrolon’ or ‘Macrolux’) is the strongest form of clear plastic sheeting available, making it a high-performance material for a huge variety of domestic and commercial applications. In recent years, Clear Polycarbonate Sheets have become a very popular replacement for glass in many applications, a good example being replacement shed windows for homeowners.
Key Features:
- Extremely high impact resistance, almost unbreakable
- Weather-resistant
- Offers UV protection
- Half the weight of glass
- Optically clear
- Excellent fire rating (Class 1)
- Safe to use with foods
- Supplied with protective film on both sides
Not only easy to handle but polycarbonate sheets also remarkably impact and are weather-resistant – perfect for both indoor and outdoor installation. This product also offers good UV protection and will aid in the protection of pictures, plants and other items susceptible to harmful UV rays.
Where other clear acrylic sheets are stronger than glass, Polycarbonate is almost unbreakable. This superb strength, combined with the fact that it is just half the weight of glass, makes Polycarbonate sheeting easy to install and perfect for applications where safety is of the utmost importance. Additionally, Clear Polycarbonate Sheet has a maximum light transmission of up to 90% and is as optically clear as glass, offering the benefits of greatly improved strength with no loss of aesthetics or vision.
Polycarbonate also has a great fire performance of up to Class 1, which is significantly better than acrylic, making it a great alternative to acrylic, especially in schools, colleges and airports where safety is vital. Unlike acrylic, Polycarbonate has the added advantage that it can be cold-curved without the risk of it cracking or breaking. Further improving its versatility, it can be thermoformed but the sheet must be oven-dried beforehand as it absorbs atmospheric moisture which will then cause bubbles when heated.
Polycarbonate can be bonded using suitable solvent-based adhesives.

How long does clear polycarbonate last?
Clear polycarbonate can last up to ten years when stored in a dry and cool environment. If you will be using it indoors or near the elements, then it is recommended that you treat it with an acrylic sealer to boost its longevity and discourage discolouration.
